Sunday Talk

It was Michael's turn to give a talk in primary today.  We barely made it in time, realizing 2 minutes before church started that clocks changed this morning!  This month's primary theme is "God Speaks Through Prophets".  We have a book called "Boys Who Became Prophets" that tells stories about all 16 latter-day prophets as young boys.  I happened to start reading chapters of it to them about 2 weeks ago.  The first one they picked was Wilford Woodruff- because they liked the sound of his name and we didn't know anything about him!  This is what he decided to talk about today.

We learned lots of interesting things that he shared in his talk.  Among the things we learned and he spoke about, was that he had many life threatening accidents as a boy, his mother died when he was a toddler and he cried and cried at her death, a favorite story about a pumpkin and a charging bull, that he decided when he was 6 to obey his dad, that he was baptized in New York at age 23 in 3 feet of snow in a river,  and that he served 6 missions in England and Canada.  I was amazed to learn that he baptized over 1,800 people as a missionary!  More impressive was that for the rest of his life he wrote one letter EVERY year to each person he baptized!!

It was fun to hear Michael read his talk, and see how interested all the children were in the stories (noted by their unusual silence).  They are interested in the idea that these men were once boys like them!  We enjoy thinking about who and what our sons will become in their lives as they keep growing so much older.
