Michael is an inventor. He always has been. One of my favorite memories of him was when he was a ship designer. He would imagine a ship or boat in his mind and then create a 3-dimensional model of it out of paper. I think he was about 6 years old. Our kitchen table was covered with different types of paper and foam core for a month [and books all about ships of course!]. He would then rush to the bathroom to fill the tub and test his model. They often sank. So back to the table he would go to try another variation.
Last week he decided to try to make a floating lantern - or a Chinese Sky Lantern. He went through 3 different models - perfecting it each time. He finally mastered the lantern [a blue tissue paper lantern], but the candle still needs work. It is difficult to make a candle hot enough that will lift the delicate lantern. He was very frustrated about his candle malfunction and is taking a break.
I love watching him focus on a project, design, create and mentally examine the entire process. I love this boy!
